E-Bike laws and regulations
New Hampshire treats compliant e-bikes like traditional bicycles, meaning no license, registration, or insurance is required. The state utilizes a three-class system that caps motor output at 750 watts.
E-Bike Classifications
- Class 1: Pedal-assist only; maximum assisted speed of 20 mph.
- Class 2: Throttle-assisted; maximum speed of 20 mph.
- Class 3: Pedal-assist only; maximum assisted speed of 28 mph.
Riding Rules & Trail Access
- Roads: All three classes are allowed on public roadways where traditional bicycles are permitted. E-bikes are strictly prohibited on all interstates.
- Paths & Trails: Class 1 and Class 2 e-bikes are generally allowed on bike paths and multi-use paths. Class 3 e-bikes are not permitted on multi-use paths unless a local municipality specifically allows it.
- Sidewalks: In many municipalities, adult bicyclists and e-bikers are expected to follow the rules of the road (as vehicle operators) and are prohibited from riding on sidewalks.
Helmet & Age Requirements
- Class 1 & 2: Helmets are required for all riders under the age of 16.
- Class 3: Riders must be at least 16 years old. Helmets are legally required for anyone under 18 riding or sitting as a passenger.
